The Baker River is over to the left of this capture. The bridge was built by one of river front property owners. I really liked the contours of the railings,bridge path, and the snow leading to the bridge. It is apparent to me that no one has used this bridge since it started snowing months ago. The bridge connects the property owner to a town owned water hole with several small waterfalls. An excellent place to cool off in the summer.

In the town that I live in, there is a place called by the locals "the Climbing Rocks", which most locals have not even been to the Rocks. The Climbing Rocks use to be a well hidden secret amongst the rock and ice climbing groups. However, that has changed it has become internationally known for passionate climbers.
Recently, I have decided to do a series of pictures of the Climbing Rocks for the local coffee shop and antique store, "The Common Cafe and Antiques". This coffee shop is about a mile and a half down the road from the Climbing Rocks which a lot of hikers and climbers will stop at to warm up in the winter.

So, during a warm snap (35F) I went to the Climbing Rocks so that I could get as close as I could to the icy cliffs. I climbed up the hill right below these icy cliffs which was pretty tricky. Actually treacherous with out spike clamp ons. The snow was slick, and the hill just steep enough to make sliding a fact not just a possiblility. It took a while but I finally grappled my way up to the ledge below the ice climbers. I was not wearing a helmet (I am bad) and every time the climbers used their picks the ice came raining down on my head, ouch.

In this capture, I found what I think looks like a woman's face on the rocks. Much to my surprise!!

My boss left out a soapstone bean pot with water in it, outside in the freezing cold. When I got to the stoneyard early in the morning there was ice structures in the bean pot. Before emptying the pot of the ice I took a bunch of captures. Then when I got home I started to play with these images.

The images on the left are part of the Quincy Bog Series. I only have about a hundred or so images to process, and that is in my spare time.
Not to long ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer, yesterday she had a biopsy done on her lymph nodes and the pathologist is pretty sure that the cancer has spread there too. I believe, next week she will be going in to surgery so I will be covering her at the kennel that she owns. Unfortunately my friend found the lump during the summer, but did not go to the doctors right away she waited until two weeks ago.No amount of urging could persuade her to do anything about it, until she went for her yearly check up. I am afraid that being in denial is not going in her favor.
I am telling this story because so many of us women do not take care of our selves. We need to take of our selves before we can take care of anyone else. We women need to do breast exams every month, and something is there, go get it checked out, the longer you wait, the worse it will be.
Please, please my fans get your breasts checked, and take good care of yourselves.

Quincy Bog, More Images For Bog Lovers

A much needed hike through the Quincy Bog area was needed for my state of mind. I am so fortunate to be so close to so many natural areas here in the White Mountains of NH.
On this day I was in search of birds,beavers,moose, or even a dragonfly to shoot (with camera of course).

I hiked to the ledges at Quincy Bog, but it was too dark for some really good pictures. The walk to the ledges was great, however a dog suddenly showed up in front of the path that Santos (my dog) and I were walking. Now, my dog is always on a leash but this other dog was not. So, we stopped, and I tried to coax the strange dog off the path. Finally the owner arrived with four more dogs, all of course were off leash, so now I had to deal with five off leash dogs running around trying to get close to my dog. Okay, maybe you should know that my dog is a cross between a German Shepherd and a Great Dane. Can we say very big. The owners started gathering up their dogs, putting leads on them and I am trying to keep my dog calm. Finally, everything is under control, and the ladies apologized. They went on their way, and I on my way to take more pictures and hopefully no more off leash dogs.
One this day, there were loons in the bog, however I left my telephoto lens in the car. So, I could watch them, and hope that they would get closer to where I was sitting, but they never did. I did see some red ribbon snakes, however I was too busy freaking out (huge phobia) to take a picture.
There are a lot of people that visit the Bog, birders, photographers,hikers,runners, and all are very nice, I have found.
I hope if you every have a chance to visit this wonderful natural area.

Hello everyone, I hope today has been a good day . In between rain storms here in lovely New Hampshire, I went out to take pictures.
Fall came so quick, and is going just as quickly in my opinion.
The colors are starting to fade, so I need to get out as much as I can to catch all of the foliage.
A little update on my moving situation. I am looking for a position of care taker for an elderly couple in exchange for room and board. This way I can still do my odd jobs, have a place to live, and follow my passion. Wish me luck!

Near to Tears

Well, last night was a real bummer. My room-mate for the last 14 months has decided that she does n't want a room-mate any more. So now I am out looking for a place to live. This whole thing is really disappointing, I moved up here from CT on her request. When I moved up here, the economy tanked and finding a job has been tortuous at best. However, I found a couple of part time jobs ranging from housecleaning, working at a dog kennel, to working in a stone store. None of these jobs paid much, and I am struggling daily to pay rent, print pictures, etc. Unfortunately for everyone, my money did not stretch enough to cover everything adequately.I have been able to register my car, get insurance or pay any of my long term bills. Last month, I had a opportunity to hang my images in two different galleries which took all of my money to do. I thought my room-mate understood this, however that would not be the case.
So, the conclusion to this really interesting problem is that I might not be able to update this blog very often but will try. Please be patient and I am sure everything will work out just fine if not better then ever.

Red Dragonfly Quincy Bog

Quincy Bog is located in Rumney New Hampshire. It is a natural area that is maintained very nicely by a conservation group.
The bog is teeming with life, at first you can hear the sounds of life. After being there for a little while you can start to see the insects in the bog. I found a Red Dragonfly and then a damsel which I took shots of. It was an extremely humid day, the sweat was pouring off of my face and body in bucket loads. My dog was doing a rather loud pant which I surmised would not allow me to see much. But, I saw dragonflies galore with in inches of me. Now, I did not have my telephoto lens with me because I made this stop on a lark.

Some of my best photography is very spontaneous. Projects percolate as I am doing the actual photographing. So, most of the time I do not know where the universe is taking me creatively. When I work with clients, it very structured and limiting creatively. My passion really comes out when I am hiking in the woods and stumble across the magic with in.

On this blog, I managed to upload some articles on how to shoot dragonflies. These photographers know what they are doing and supply much needed advice to yours truly. The biggest help is to remain patient and still, which I think is a very zen like activity. So, sweat dripping and misquitos biting I have captured my favorite insects.

Which One And Why?

Well I am done with the coffee shop project, I managed to get five of my images up on to the walls of the cafe. If you live close by the name of the coffee shop is "Common Cafe" and its in Rumney, and in Rumney Village.
What an exhausting day yesterday. I totally got stressed over getting the project together and then over to the cafe. Today, I did the house cleaning and then went for a walk with the wonder dog. By the time I got home, the sky clouded up and it was looking like rain. So, we sat down to a movie which was one of those psychological ones that scare the daylights out of you. Not my favorite type of movie, so I worked on my photos and websites.
Tomorrow, I will be working on the Ashland Gallery project, this one also needs to have five images for the jury process. The theme will be New Hampshire sights, like Mount Washington (which I don't have yet), Old Man of the Mountain with out his face ( which I do have) and I am thinking a few of Lake Region lakes. I have 10 days to pull this together, however I do not need frames for the images just the prints and matting--yippee!
Well, Ice Truckers just came on so I am off.

Ooops, it has been a long, and exciting week here in lovely New Hampshire. First of all, a new coffee shop in Rumney opened Aug 1 and when I went to check it out I got to talking to the owner Brian. I was working on my laptop of my media, and he was very impressed. He asked me if I wanted to show my images in his cafe and of course I said yes. Now, here is the twister, that was on Aug 1, and he wanted the images framed by Aug 8th, oh my god. So like a made woman I have been running around getting mats,frames,prints,business cards,flyers,and the list goes on. Well,pretty much at the same time, I got a call from an Art Gallery, and they would like me to come in for the jury process. At first, that is suppose to be on Aug 25, but three days later the Art Gallery called and said the jury process was moved up to Aug 18. Doesn't sound bad right, well there is a lot to do when you are being juried or showing. So, yes I have been running around trying to find an acceptable printer, framer, and what ever else.
Then to top it off, I had an accident while shooting rapids and waterfalls. Note to self, must buy better sandals for walking through rivers and rocks. Long story short, I slipped on a rock in the middle of the rapids and landed on my camera on the rock. The body of the camera is okay, but the wide angle lense is messed up. Oh, and I am a little messed up. Knee banged and cut, throat cut and banged by camera, and my chest has a big ugly bruise from the rock. Like I said I am having one crazy week. But, thank god the camera is okay!

Sculptured Rocks on Caffine

Saturday was a wonderful day. I checked out the Sculptured Rocks and took a lot of captures. This one is along the gorge, and the trees grow right out of the sides of the rocky terrain. Climbing around the rocks with two cameras and a dog is challenging at best. I am no longer the climber I use to be when I was younger but I managed fairly well. I am considering this one for the gallery as a sample. any comments?

I am very excited today. I received a call from a women who runs the Art Gallery in Ashland New Hampshire. She explained to me that she needs another photographer for the gallery. For whatever reason she only has one photographer showing at the gallery and would love to see my work to see if it is a fit. The appointment was originally set for Aug 25 but today it was moved up to Aug 15th.
Now I am panicked, do I have what it takes? Do I have enough money to print up the 4 to 5 captures for the jury to judge? My head is in a whirl. I am anxious,and restless and am finding it hard to work on the images I took yesterday. I even had to go to my happy place (meditation) for a while.
Now, I am back to work on my images, the one above is the first one I got done today. However, I am easily distracted from my work. I would love to talk to some one about my work, another photographer to help me decide which ones to show. I don't know anyone locally, so I will have to go with out having another s input.
I am scared, thrilled, and pretty much loco

Fantastic day today. I went to the Sculpture Rocks and hiked the trail. The trail was etched out by ice, and the rocks are very special. The gorge has these gorgeous waterfalls, swimming pools, and fabulous plants. First, Santos (my German Shepherd) went to the rocks that form the Gorge, these were shaped in the last ice age by glaciers. We climbed around taking photos of people jumping off cliffs into pools of water that are very deep.
We then went on the trail, and we searched out the bogs and miniature waterfall. Unfortunately, I got bit by a deer fly which was very itchy. When I was leaving my hand blew up twice the size of normal. I had to go home to get some Benydral, My hand is still pretty big, been icing it all evening but it is still getting bigger. I must be very allergic to the Deer Fly.
Tonight, I am processing the photographs I took and probably I will uploading then some time next week.

Today, I went to a Nursing Home with one of my clients that I help. Ms P wanted to visit her cousin who is an invalid. When we first started going cousin M was barely responsive and crunched up in the fetal position. That was 5 months ago, now M is talking and responding very well to treatment. This picture is a representation of our visit. P and M and me!

This is a Balloon flower that I found in a friends yard. She had invited me over for a swim in her lovely pool. When I got there, I was blown away by all of her gardens. This was a great afternoon of swimming and photo taking. When the day came to an end there were thunder head clouds overhead. So, a quick get away was necessary but not with out a treasure load of captures. It was a good day

Okay, Its My Birthday

Yep, it is my Birthday and I am celebrating my 55 years on the planet. Yep, 10 more years to social security if there is any left for me at that time. I am one those people that likes to celebrate my birthday or anyone's, however since most people are away on vacation at this time, it is usually a very slow day.
When I was young, my Mother would buy a cake for my birthday because it would be too hot to bake. We did not have big birthday parties when I was growing up, and birthdays were not a big deal either.
Not true for my own kids, I remember hosting a backwards birthday party for one of my daughters, where every thing was done backwards including wearing your clothes backwards. It was so much fun, and the kids were wild about it, including the parents.
So, for my birthday this year I went out and bought a chocolate cake with peanut butter chocolate frosting "YUMMY". I can hardly wait to have some but I will wait till tonight and have a slice with my room mate and her new friend.
Birthdays should be a big deal. I know some people hate birthdays. They moan and groan and truly make a spectacle of themselves. Yes, you are getting older, so what; we are born, we live, we die, and you better dance like no one is watching except maybe at a funeral.Though, I can think of a few people that would enjoy having people dancing at their funeral, I am one of them .
So this is what I want to do for my birthday. I want some one to blow bubbles so I can take pictures of the bubbles. Yep, that is right, I want bubbles. I told this to my room-mate and she rolled her eyes at me like I was some kind of idiot. That is okay, its my party and I want bubbles, dammit.
Nope, not sad about my birthday at all. I have done a lot in my 55 yrs, some I will talk about, others I rather keep to myself, and I must say I have very few regrets. Regrets are for fools who look to the past instead of enjoying the here and now! I remember jumping from bridges to swim in a river ( if you remember the Silver Bridge- email me), I have ridden horses, run marathons, biked lots of miles, walked even more miles ( and still do), I have fallen in love and out, I have had a soul mate, owned dogs and cats and even a goat. I have owned 10 cars so far, the first three looked like I ran them in a demolition derby. One car my first husband flipped over with me in it. The rest of cars survived much better as I got older and more careful. I owned have owned new cars from the dealer and have bought used. I will not being buying new any time soon, I would rather spend my money on cameras, lenses, laptop (hint, hint)
Back to being happy about where I am right now. I have three great children, three grandchildren, and a son in law. They all live out in California and they are doing well. I have a 10 year old SUV that serves me well, a 5 year old German Shepherd/Great Dane and he goes hiking with me at least three to four times a month. So, you see I am happy to be 55 years old, and I am dancing as fast as can!

Today is my son's birthday, he is twenty two and he lives in Southern CA. Both of my daughters wished him a happy birthday and his nieces and nephew too. My Son, Ian is a wonderful son. He is quiet but once he gets to know you he can be quite humorous. He loves to skate board and play the guitar. I am dedicating this orange wildflower to my youngest- Love ya honey

This wonderful brook is very close to where I live. I pass this brook every day, sometimes several times a day. When I walk my dog, I like to take one of my cameras with me to shoot anything that pleases my eye. This brook pleases my eye, so much so that I have many captures of it for every season.

Thoughts on Composition

My thoughts on thoughtful composition with a touch of creativity.

Successful composition exists where the diverse elements of a scene is presented to create a particular effect: peace,harmony, drama, and discord.

It is important to learn to recognize the "natural" harmony contained in flowers and gardens: this will help the photographer to produce a more satisfying composition.
Check for distractions IE plant labels,passer by, and other distractions like my dog walking in front of the plant I am shooting and ..... well use your imagination. Often, our eyes do not see the distractions, such as telephone wires, branches and well you get the idea.

For the ideal capture, set up the camera on a tripod so you can depict only what you want to include in your capture. Good time to look for any of those pesky distractions.

Consider your subject from all angles, not just from the top. Consider
lying on your back and shoot the picture at this angle. Sometimes I take a potted plant and put it up high to get this angle. I carry a step ladder in my car just for this purpose.

Look for unusual subjects that have angles,patterns to create a more original or striking composition.

Ensure that your photographs have a clear center of interest; use mass, colour or contrast to achieve this. Also, use natural gardens, wildflowers in a field,paths, and avenues that create scale and perspective and a sense of depth.

I find that one of the best ways to get a really great composition in a photograph is to have flowers in odd numbers such as one flower or three flower etc.

This afternoon I sat myself down to my laptop and switched on the photo editor. I started going through my images that I have not processed yet and came across this Iris with raindrops. So, always ready to for the raindrop challenge I start working on this Iris. The first thing I did was to crop the hell out of hit. Then I enlarged it to what I thought was acceptable. Next, I selected a layer in vivid light mode. On to top of this layer I worked on the Brightness and contrast adjustments and upped the volume. Then I worked with adjustments in shadow and color saturation. Here is the results. Not bad if I say so myself!

Rain drops are what I am working on right now. To perfect the rain drop I have been experimenting with a soft brush in vivid light mode. However in this one I decided to use soft brush in soft light mode.

Here is my old fashion pink rose with raindrops. This was captured with a Nikon D300 in RAW format. Exported using Picassa, saved as a JPEG and then exported in to Photoshop. Once in Photoshop I resized the image with a extended black border. Then I adjusted the Bright/Contrast and painted the raindrops with vivid light.

It has been raining pretty much all week, actually for the last two weeks. I am suffering from a slight case of cabin fever. Very difficult to get out to take photos. I have a bunch of places I want to go but with the rain its not likely to work out. So, I have been taking the time to do image processing and camera clean up. The weather forcast is for rain through Friday with a hope that on Saturaday will be clear. I am hoping that this is the case because I have plans to head over to D'Acres for a Bluegrass Concert. D'Acres is a Educational Organic Farm that has demostrations in organic farming, organic lifestyle, and a host of miscellanous workshops such as a writing group,poetry group,weaving group, and the list goes on.

Last Sunday I went to Sugar Hill New Hampshire to celebrate Fathers Day. We went to Pollys Pancake House and came across a ton of flowers. These though caught my eyes because they were hanging on even though they already had their fifteen minutes of fame.

Old Man of the Mountain, Where it use to be

Last Sunday, we went up to Sugar Hill to have breakfast at Polly's Pancake House and on the way back we took the opportunity to take a look at what use to be the Old Man on the Mountain. It took a while to find the perfect spot to capture this image but I think that the clouds are the most amazing part of this capture. Taken with a Nikon D300.

Went to a graduation party yesterday afternoon and found these flowers and plants arranged on the most beautiful granite walls. With live jazz playing and beautiful plants to photograph, I was in heaven.

In my backyard there is a lovely lilac tree that smells wonderful. The butterflies have converged onto this Lilac tree in a swarm yesterday. So, I grabbed my lawn chair and sat very close and started shooting. Now, you get to see the many different shots and the interpretations in photoshop.

While I was taking care of one of my clients 5 dogs, I started taking pictures in her yard. So many beautiful plants and it was at the witching hour.Twilight is my favorite time to take captures, so many colors show up in the images that don't when the sun is bright.
